Mobberly Joins Fight Against Human Trafficking

Posted: September 19, 2017

Mobberly Baptist Church will host the Call to Freedom Human Trafficking Conference on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The conference will be held on the Longview campus located at 625 E. Loop 281, Longview, Texas.

Call to Freedom is a human trafficking conference aimed to help community businesses and individuals become aware of the issue of human trafficking. Along with bringing awareness, the conference will provide helpful tools to help people recognize and take a decisive role in annihilating human trafficking in East Texas in our generation.

Sujo John, one of the speakers at the conference, is the founder of YouCanFree.Us, a global coalition and organization with a passion to end human trafficking in the world and free the women who are enslaved by this industry. John started his organization after being placed in the spotlight due to his survival of the World Trade Center's collapse on 9/11. While spending a few years traveling and speaking about his escape from the towers, John visited the red light district in India, and knew he would never be the same.

"I know what it is to be trapped," John said in reference to his experience in surviving the collapse of the World Trade Center on 9/11. "In a way, I realized that I had something in common with these women."

The YouCanFree.Us ministry stresses the vital importance of community awareness and education. If a city does not realize that there are enslaved women within its borders, how can anyone fight for their freedom? Human trafficking is all-too-common on the streets of Tyler and Longview, and East Texans are waking up to this horrific reality.

Organizations all over the area are fighting for the lives of those caught in human trafficking. The Women in Need ministry of Mobberly Baptist Church works with other local ministries like Refuge of Light, Rahab's Retreat and Ranch and Partners in Prevention to educate others, locate women in danger and offer after-care for those who are able to escape.

Alyssa Whitehurst leads the Women In Need ministry and helps to empower over 60 Mobberly volunteers who regularly seek to reach out in a variety of ways.

"As we continue to engage people in the community, we realize there are serious traumas, hang-ups and trials that women are going through," Whitehurst said.

The Call to Freedom Conference can help East Texans recognize human trafficking and take steps to stop it. The conference features speakers Sujo John and Clarissa Drysdale-Anderson.
