Mobberly Members to Address East Texas Hunger Issue By Preparing 130,000 Meals

Posted: August 2, 2017

Across East Texas, a great number of children and adults have little or nothing to eat. This fall, people who attend Mobberly Baptist Church will be addressing the issue by purchasing and packaging 130,000 meals that can feed approximately 780,000 people.

The initiative is called The Jerusalem Project. Mobberly will be working with local shelters and food banks to distribute the meals, which will be packaged during a church-wide event on the church’s campuses in Longview and Marshall on Nov. 8.

Last year, hundreds of Mobberly members participated in more than 80 service projects across East Texas as part of The Jerusalem Project. Two years ago, Mobberly members participated in The Malawi Project, which was similar in nature to this fall’s The Jerusalem Project. In partnership with Numana, a hunger relief organization, Mobberly members raised more than $79,000 and packaged enough meals to feed 1.6 million people in the flood-ravaged African nation of Malawi as part of that project.

This year, partnering again with Numana, Mobberly members are planning to raise $40,000 in order to purchase the meals that will be distributed in East Texas. At least 1,000 volunteers will be needed to help package the meals.

The Jerusalem Project’s name was derived from words written in Acts 1:8, in which Jesus said, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come to you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” In today’s context, East Texas is considered Mobberly’s Jerusalem.

“Following The Malawi Project, there was a great desire to serve the Lord as families, Connect Groups and as a church body,” Eric Perkins, Mobberly’s Serve Pastor, said. “I wondered why we couldn’t do this more often and love our Jerusalem this way. Last year, we had a great response to The Jerusalem Project and saw a great outpouring of love from our members toward our community. When we were considering this year’s project, we decided to combine loving our community with packaging meals for those in need.

“Our hope is that The Jerusalem Project will be a gentle nudge to our members to step outside their comfort zones and embrace the calling of Jesus Christ to love our neighbors by sharing the gospel through giving and serving our Jerusalem.”
