Real People...Real Stories

The evidence of Christian love has never been as apparent to us as it has these last nine months. The hands and feet of Christ have been at work through the members of our Small Group, as they have lavished us with love, prayer, cards, meals, money, gift cards, personal visits, words of encouragement, hospital visits, caring for our dog, mowing our lawn, and a new bathroom. Yes, a new bathroom.

As Cole faced his second leg amputation, we asked the fleshly questions to God, "Why us, God? Haven't we been through enough? Cole has fought diabetes for 45 years, is legally blind, and now will be a double amputee?" Fast forward six months through various medical treatments, surgeries, and 65 days in and out of the hospital, to the amputation that we had feared would come. Our Small Group recognized that Cole would be wheelchair bound, at least for several months and at most for the rest of his life. They offered us an incredible gift of a new wheelchair accessible bathroom. Through the talents, skills and resources that God provided to the men of our class, Cole now has a beautiful bathroom that is fully accessible by wheelchair, even the shower.

As the reality of this gift began to come to fruition, we found ourselves asking the same question, but with a humbleness that was not there before, we asked, "Why us, God? What have we done to deserve such blessings and outpouring of love?"

We have learned a lot about the prince of Peace, blessings, humility, and the love of Christ through both tears and laughter the last several months. Cole is still in a wheelchair, but with plans to be fitted with leg prosthesis, so he can get "back on his feet," as he says. God blessed Cole with an incredible outlook on the future, a sense of humor, a love for life, and the gift of inspiration. He jokes now that he has his foot in the door of heaven. Our Small Group continues to love and support us, and go out-of-their-way to accommodate our needs. They exemplify the love of Christ, as we all should at every opportunity.
